Little Red Flying Fox: Pteropus scapulatus

  • The little red flying fox is, as the name suggests, smaller than the others in it's genus.

  • It also has, again as the common name suggests, a definite rufous tinge to the fur.

  • They have a very wide range over the continent - from the temperate south east, up the east coast, across tropical northern Australia, and down the west coast to Broome (Strahan 1998).

  • Within this range it moves a great deal, being more nomadic than the others in it's group.

  • It is probably returning to and setting up camps in response to flowering of particular trees that blossom at different times around the continent.
