Narrow-leaved Ginger

Alpinia modesta

  • This is a small ginger with, as the common name suggests, dark green narrow leaves.

  • There is with no petiole where the leaves join up with the pseudo-stem.

  • The underside veins and edges of the leaves, and the main pseudo-stems often have a reddish tinge (Nicholson and Nicholson 1994).

  • Flowers are produced at the end of the main stalks, and are followed by small blue fruits.

  • The rhizome which is just underneath the ground can be eaten and tastes slightly of ginger.

  • This plant is found in the tropical rainforest of eastern and north-eastern Queensland (Nicholson and Nicholson 1994).
